Hi,

I have acquired a Mark 35a motor and am looking to get it running for use. I have bought a manual for it and went to check it out and found something that confuses me. I would like someone else's opinion before I do anything else.

The history of this motor is not known except that I was told "it was stored in a barn for a few years...I started it up a year ago and it ran"

I opened the screw that says "Flush" on the lower unit, expecting that there would be nothing there, that it was a place for water to flush the cooling system. When opened, oil came out! I closed the screw and have done nothing else to the lower unit. Should there have been oil there? I thought the oil would only be found below this point. If oil should not be there, any idea of why it is?

I have posted a photo here:
http://www.getsiriusweb.net/mark35a/

Thanks for the quick replies!

I gather that I can open this and let the oil there drain out? Once that is done then drain and fill the lower unit, run the motor and see if oil show up there again?

Would it make sense that there would be oil here and no oil dripping out of the water intake or exhaust?

Not sure what "rea" is but I will get a serial number off the motor tonight when I get home.

All Mark 35a engines were built in 1959
