Re: Martial Arts??

I did Wing Chun Kung Fu I did this for about a year until about 4 months ago and it was great. I must admit I miss it but my motivation wavered a bit as even though it was evenings it felt like it cut right into the middle of my day, and I felt I learnt enough to handle myself in some situations where before I didn't have a clue so I guess the fear if you like which also drove me as I wanted to know more wasn't as significant any more.

However go for it. Don't over commit too much time as it will become a chore, but at least once a week, I was thinking about it for years before I did anything and would/should have done it sooner. I'm sure I'll go back to it again in the not to distant future too.

Re: Martial Arts??

all depends on what you want to accomplish.

i would research the different styles in your area and then come up with a game plan on what you would like to do. Then you can fit the style to your goal.

Myself i studied and taught Kempo. The style is based on the theory of the best of several styles combined into one, giving diversity to the student.
Like all styles and practitioners, each one has there pro's and con's and you just need to be honest with yourself on what you want to accomplish.
I wish you well.......

During my short 20 yr stint in the Army I have to say that Kempo is my preferred style. It incorporates many boxing type strikes and for defense it fit our purpose.

There are very pretty styles ...... as Bass Tracker said it depends on what you want to accomplish....

Now that I am older....... Glock 23 is my favorite style :D

Re: Martial Arts??

There is a class around here that teaches a mix of Phillipino Martial Arts focusing on Escrima (stick fighting). I kind of like the fact it focuses on weapons fighting such as knife, double sword, staff, etc since I have always loved sword fighting. But I'm torn. Traditional Kendo (Samari type sword training) is one of my favorites, but isn't offered around here. I think I'll go to the class tomorrow and see what its like. The teacher said classes are small and he gives a lot of 1 on 1 training. He's ex-military, and from what I can find about him online, he's studied under some very impressive Masters.

I'm 33 years old, I hope you can still teach an old dog new tricks....lol.

Interested in Jiu Jitsu...

From what I've seen, a lot of it works in a real-world situation.

I like the idea of Glock Fu too, but using it outside the home can land you in a lot of trouble even if you were in the right. It's a tricky subject for me that I'd love to discuss in another thread as I don't want to hijack this one.

Re: Martial Arts??

I'm not really a "gun guy," but i do have a certain appreciation for folks that use them to hunt and/or protect themselves.

We have had two incidents in my area in the last week or so, where people shot and killed someone who was trying to rob them, or break into their home. In both cases, the assailants were armed and displaying the weapons. Since I also live in an area with a very high murder rate, it is not unreasonable for the victims to have felt that they were in mortal danger.

All of this said, and to get back to the original topic, I would much prefer to use non-lethal means for self protection ... If I can.
