I agree with Zephyr, from a Collectors standpoint, we dread of originals in that condition. But to each their own of course.

The paint is different in 56, 57 and 58. All called Holiday Bronze, but with a year after it.

that motor is in nice shape. i dont think id paint it until after a season of use so you could find and fix any possible issues. ( kind of a shame to start wrenching on a freshly painted motor to replace a 50 cent o-ring!)

Well the paint was going to be for the boat, not the motor. I like the original paint job on the boat from the factory (image below), and was thinking I would use a similar red on the hull to match the red on the boat to the red on the motor.

The paint on the motor was in better condition then what I anticipated to be honest. It looks really pretty good given its age.

Yea, amazingly enough, you'll find that there are still a lot of those old Johny/Rudes out there still, after all these years, with nice paint on them. Just ask HighTrim, he has found some real beauties here just in the last few months. Sometimes people just stash the oldies away in the garage and forget about them for years. Twenty......thirty years later, they dig them out from a pile of hoard and sell it. LOL Last night, I just picked up a 1954 Fleetwin that just came out of one of those situations. It needs tuned up and new coils, but I believe it'll be an excellent runner. I think this old Johny you have here will be a good runner too.

The guy said he had it running on a 16ft jon last year and had it over 30mph--which sounds about right. He said compression is around 100 in 1 cylinder, and around 95 in the other... I know that's slightly lower then ideal, but is that anything I should worry about? Thanks.

Could be low, might be fine. Depends on the tester he used, they are all a little different. I would take your own readings on your own tester so you have a baseline for future troubleshooting. Let us know what you find.

After the test, decarb the motor and retest. Might raise things up a little.

Well, it sounds to me, that the old classic is running just fine. No worries there. The old RD's/Big Twins were definately built to last.

Cool deal...but I wouldn't repaint that Sea Horse yet...clean it up real good then hit it with a few coats of wax. It'll shine up real good and you can do the paint restoration later if you have to.
