I am looking to find out what is the best material to use to rebuild my transom . Are composit material as heavy as plywood ? I know that composit material won't rot and wanted to use it . What are the names of sheet composit used for this ? Does epoxy resin work well with composit material ? Any suggestion's on epoxy Resin brand to use ? Thanks JJB

Epoxy resin and plywood. Seal the plywood with the resin and you should get 20+ years out of it maybe more.

JJB a few things............

This is the 5th post related to the same topic

It is obvious that you are seeking a special answer and have tended to doubt the responses and ask again.

Good luck with your bayliner project.

JJB- I have used plywood for many projects and restorations and have had great results. However I am moving towards compsites. Not so much to get rid of the rot problem but for wieght savings.
We restore offshore powerboats so wieght is a huge issue here.
We are also designing and building a mold for a new 28' offshore style performance hull. Planing on it being 100% composite.
I'm leaning towards Nida-core. The H8PP Honeycomb. www.nidacore.com

You need to do some cost comparison. Composite material is much more expensive than wood.
Will you benefit enough to justify the cost difference.

I will still continue to use wood for core material on some projects but on others you just can't compromise the no rot and weight saveing quality.

Check Nida-core web site, ask them to send you some samples.

If I was to use plywood , what is the best type to use ? I have found this okoume marine type ply that about 15 lbs lighter then other marine ply in it's class . I think it said it's has a pinkish tone to it and can be used for stringers etc, it's not cheap . anybody ever use this for transom building ? and Has anyone ever used or heard of epoxy from Progressive epoxy inc in NH ? Thanks for the input ! JJB
