First time boat buyer! I want a boat that I can take out on the lake with my wife and kids and bunch of friends. Tubing, skiing and all that stuff. I am looking at a 2002 Maxum 2100 SR for $19,000 or a Bayliner 205 for $16,000. The maxum has the mercruiser 5.7 and the Bayliner has a 5.0. Either one will suit my needs, I am just wondering which is the better deal. Any comments? Thanks!

I should add: the Maxum has 38 hours on it. The Bayliner has 50 hours on a new motor. Motor was replaced last year due to freeze damage. Thanks again for any comments!

The boats are pretty close in quality

Bayliner has a perceived quality problem that can affect resale value

It really comes down to which one you like and how well its first owner cared for it

With the Bayliner haveing a frozen motor in the past it does not sound like it had good care

Are there matiance records on both boats ? A lot of stuff can get ingored for a few years and catch up to you in a painfull way

hands down that the Maxum. 5.7 vs 5.0 we've got a 5.7 VP, 23' chris craft deckboat. it's rated for 13 people, and loaded runs out at close to 40mph 6 on board 45mph.

Have you checked the NADA guide for these boats? They seem to be on the high end of the price scale for this time of the year. A maxum is just a dressed up Bayliner. I know people who own both of these brands of boats and they are happy with them. Are both power plants fuel injected?

Been shopping for a new boat myself! Was told Maxum and Bayliner Are built by the same Manufacturer-Brunswick-and use the same molds? Bayliner is an entry level, Maxum in the middle and SeaRay the top.Not sure if this applies to the 2002 or not.

Back in 2002 I bought my 1998 24' Wellcraft for $20k and it only had 65 hours on it. You should get either of those boats for less than what they are asking.

I bought my boat in february from a motivated seller. You need to find one of those.

Thanks for all the replies! I ended up buying the maxum for 19K. Might have been a little steep, but the boat has only 38 hours on it and was pretty much immaculate. (Sellers were a cute old gay couple that wouldn't stop bickering- but had been meticulous about upkeep of boat.) Part of the deal was that I was getting sick of looking. I have had it out in the water (in the rainy cold seattle weather) once- so far so good....

Well, of those two I'd say you made the right choice. Out of all the boats outthere, you sure don't need one that had to have the engine replaced! Not a good sign of care!

It seems like a lot to pay...but I'm with ya on the "sick of looking premium" that sometimes factors in. Enjoy the boat and don't woory about what you paid.

You'll never regret getting the bigger engine!
