Thanks to everyone here for helping with all of my questions. The whole outdrive thing is fascinating me, I have been reading everything I can get my hands on covering them. Then with help here I have learned a lot.
Today I went to the local marina and looked through their scrap yard. I found an old boat there that burned up. It didn't sink, but destroyed most of the boat. The fire started under the steering wheel someplace in the wiring, gutted everything around there. The only damage to the rear is the water hoses on the front of the engine melted just enough to warp them a little. The engine cover isn't even smoke damaged. The block looks good, all parts from there back look good, not heat damaged. The outdrive (which is what I am looking for) looks good so far. The engine drive combo is a 160hp pre alpha, mine is a 165hp pre alpha. It should be an easy swap. When I got my drive apart I found a good size crack in the housing so need a new one.
The best part is the price. High price $20, low price free. Waiting for a call back.

I would pay them something for it and get a receipt. Who knows where the title to this boat is or who owns it (insurance company?). You do not want someone coming back at you later wanting payment for this salvage motor.

I got the call today, free with a clear title as long as I take it all. If I only take the drive it will cost a lot. I am thinking I could use it all for the price.
The hull is a melted peice of fiberglass, but everything else is great from what I see.

Do like i do. Get it all, use what you need, seel the rest on Ebay, scrap the hull at the landfill. I do it all the time and clean up...

How common is it to find wrecked boats at marinas and buy for the parts you need? How do you locate a marina like this? Just call around?

I would get it! My local landfill would take the left overs for a $40 a ton.
