Hi
I have a 1982 MC-1 drive with 1.5 ratio gearing.
Can an Alpha 1 Gen 1 or Gen 2 lower gear box be mated to the MC-1 upper? Is there anything that needs to be considered with regards to gear ratio campatability, ie I understand that the final ratio of 1.5 is achieved through both the top AND bottom units combined?

Also, can an Alpha Gen 1 or Gen 2 be mated to the MC-1 bell housing if I were to do a complete out drive upgrade?

Cheers

Ok, thanks. So are you referring to Alpha 1 complete drive to MC-1 bell housing? Will the MC-1 hydraulic rams fit onto the Alpha?
Will an Alpha lower unit fit an MC-1 upper drive?

I'm just trying to weigh up the most practical and cost effective options for upgrading my installation. Unfortunately we don't have access to "cheap" SEI stuff due to international freight etc.

Cheers.

Don is right on.

I have a Alpha (Early one) bolted to my MC1 bell housing. It works fine.

The bell housing/gimbal housing (transom fitting) need to be matched, but the Alpha will bolt to the bell no problem.

also, keep your MC1 lower if it's good. It will bolt up to an Alpha (early), and is good for a spare.

Thanks for that. My issue is that just 15 hours ago I spent a small fortune on getting a leaky seal sorted around the shift shaft in the lower housing (corrosion causing difficult to remove seal carrier = expensive repair bill :-( , and now i discover another leak emerging from the prop / exhaust area. Now, I realise that the leak could be coming from one of several places but i am wondering whether that since this boat sat in a shed unused for twelve years prior to me buying it there may be other future leaky issues surface? Perhaps I may be better off to cut my losses and get hold of another later model drive, or even sell my child and fork out the $$$$ for a new one?!

Let me know if you're planning on passing through Auckland and have some time to kill!

Got my flights a couple of hours ago. I arrive in Auckland and have 1 hour and 30 minutes to clear customs and passport control, run to the domestic terminal and make the plane for New Plymouth... :faint2:

Re: MC-1 to Alpha upper / lower compatibility

Ok, so Im now giving serious thought to importing an SEI drive; complete. Now, I would like to reuse my existing hydraulic rams of my MC-1 drive, however I understand that my rams have a smaller bore for the rubber bushes at each end than the later Alpha drive. SEI dont supply the stainless pin / shaft that passes through the drive for the rams to pivot on, so Im wondering whether I will be able to remove the one from my MC1 which has a smaller end diamater and install in the new SEI Alpha drive? Or is the out side diamater of the the pin where it passes through the drive larger / smaller as well? I guess I could be asking SEI this question......? :)
