first i wana say happy new year to all .

i am about to get up a sleeping mcm 5.0 litre thats has not run for two years.

enging serial number on the carb cover reads , # 0L612762

transom serial # 0L8O6579 w o t rpm 4400 to 4800 left hand roatation '

firing order 18436572 timing 10 degree bdtc plugs AC mr43lts.

last time we try start two years ago it would just run for a few second then cuts off, it did runs about a week before that, so it is been sitting all this time just like that, it is also a close cooling system,

?? what year is this engine? very important i need to perchase a altinator for it.

last what is the basic trouble shooting i need to start with? the fuel pump is electric .

thanks guys for any info on this puzzel .

Re: mcm 5.0 serial # info needed please

It's probably running for about 15 to 20 seconds and then dies. Caused by a bad oil pressure switch or connection to the switch that controls the electric fuel pump.

Here's the wiring diagram

Fuel_Pump_Wiring.jpg

You will need service manual #24 for the engine and #14 for the drive from the Adults Only sticky.

PS: It's a 1998

happy new year dons , thanks i was hoping you take a look at this, do you know what altinator # would fit this engine the previous owner has remove it and end up perchast the wrong one. i know it is not the v belt tipe it is the flat one. thanks again , i hope it is just the oil pressure switch. because on this boat the fuel pump is kinday a headace to get to bayliner 245 .

The OEM pn for the alternator is 807625T. It's a Mando. Just get one the crosses to that PN and it should fit.

That pressure switch is located just above where the block mounted oil filter is, or would be if it has a remote oil filter.

Re: mcm 5.0 serial # info needed please

this morning i shine my flashlight down on the portside and i remember seeing a what looks like a oil pressure switch with two wires going to it. real tight spot to get to oh boy, bondo i think i might need to lose a few pound to get at this engine , lol i am six foot two inches 270 lbs so i know i will be gettine cuts and bruises on this one, you have to wonder what these boat builders was thinking when they design these boats.

thanks guys

I work on these things for a living, and I have been wondering the same thing for years. I also have a bounty out for a few of those design engineers that seem to be lacking a lot in the common sense catagory.

welcome to the You Cant Get THere From Here Club, I know how difficult these motors are to work on,I own one. The automotive field is no better, try working on the new pickups with the cab forward design. those @#%$*& so called engineers should be made to fix their own designs, we might see some changes. oh well, had to vent a little, was working on a ford aerostar today:mad:

dont know if i should start a new thread on this , if i should let me know.

well it seems the owner was trying to change the oil two years ago he empty the oil but he claim he couldnt reach/find the oil filter, so its been sitting all this time with no oil. he bought a oil filter kit which will bypass the original filter and mount this one on the riser just like some of the v8 merc i work on before, i saw the kit in the boat i will take pics and make model number to see if this is the right one, or worst maybe the engine gona have to be hoist to do all of this. cant touch the boat yard as of yet too cold out here in brooklyn. your thought guys thanks.

Re: mcm 5.0 serial # info needed please

If you can't change the filter, the chances of installing that kit are ZERO.
Just hope that it's not one of those cheap kits. I have seen those things crack, leak, hoses blow apart, you name it. The only warning you get is suddenly you have an oil pressure alarm, or if you don't have one and aren't watching the gauge, the engine starts making noise.

And yes, you should start a new thread with a different problem, otherwise people miss the second problem all together because they don't read all the replies, or you could mistake the answer for one problem to be for the second problem.

Re: mcm 5.0 serial # info needed please

I think you will have to pull the drive and lift the motor to install the remote unit, strange that it wasnt on there from the factory. you will have to install 2 longer studs in the port riser to mount the filter mount..these motors are a #%$*&@ to work on but actualy fairly easy to pull out.
good luck:)

Re: mcm 5.0 serial # info needed please

We have already had to pull a engine on a trophy just to get the filter off and I would also like the name of the so called engineer !!! So now mercury started using remote oil filters on some engines,But did they really have to mount it upside down (WHAT A MESS.)

Re: mcm 5.0 serial # info needed please

update dont want to start a new thread, ??? now that i am ready to crank/start the engine to see if she will stay running, i just changing the oil pressure safety switch.

the drive is not install at the moment, it is a close cooling system, that gets it raw water from a belt driven pump through hull, if i just let it runs for say 30 second will the water pump burn up????? just dont want to do something nuts right now, your thought guys,

Re: mcm 5.0 serial # info needed please

Yes, it will burn up. Those pumps have a lot more friction in them than any of the drive pumps, and the burn up quick.
You do not need the drive on to run the engine.

Re: mcm 5.0 serial # info needed please

ok just back from the yard, have a lot of onfo so far,

just found out that the the close cooling system is just a half system, the risers/manifold has salt water going to them no antifreeze, only the engine block.
and guys the ongly way i could get to the oil filter is by removing the whole manifold/riser, with that off i just put in new plugs/wires and again this is the right time to install that remote oil filter. dons thanks for the info on not starting the engine without water going to the belt driven pump.

will post the outcome soon, thanks

Re: mcm 5.0 serial # info needed please

up date, good news.

new riser/manifolds

new plugs/wires

new oil pressure switch

new remote oil filter kit

new altinator

plum a fresh water flush for the riser/manifold after every use

start right up and purring like a kitten, thanks to all for the great help as usual.

culprit for starting and runs then shut off was indeed the oil pressure switch, you guys nail it.

thanks
