Re: mechanics wages

There was an article about shortages of mechanics (and generally shortages of all tradespeople) these days. Everyone is encouraged to go to college and get degrees in philosophy while jobs needing mechanical skills can't find anyone.

If you are employing this person, beware, he/she is worth a lot more than you may think.

If you are the person seeking emplyment, you should be able to hold out for a lot more than they were paying several years ago.

Re: mechanics wages

This is a tough one, I think you should start out with a reasonable #, say for the first month, with a better wage after the initial check out time garantee. Say, Ill pay you $9.00 an hour for the first month and see what I think, then if I think you have potential I will give you say $12.50 if I think you are worth it.

The reason I say this is that I was an autobody person for 25 years. I never saw anyone come out of a trade school that was worth ten cents untill he had worked on the line for at least 6 months. Some just were not Bodymen and never would be. There is a lot of difference between a student and an empoyee.

Either you are a mechanic or your not, its in your genes. No amount of training can change that.

Re: mechanics wages

Good question.
I think the problem is that not many good mechanics work in the recreation field. Right now a good heavy duty journeyman can make around $28-$50 depending on where he works. A mechanic working at an atv/sled/boat dealer is lucky if he makes half of that. I know a fellow who went to school and after his pre-employment time, started working at a dealer for 12.50/hr. Funny thing is his brother started out working on construction at $15/hr with absolutely no schooling. It's easy to see which one a young guy would do. As it sits now, I think the rec mechanic is making around $20, his brother is now an iron worker, making aroung $28, plus his per-diem and bonuses.
No suprise in my mind why there is a shortage of tradesmen, when you can get a degree and earn more, or you can skip post-secondary education and work and earn more.

Re: mechanics wages

There is no respect of tradesmaen today. And alot of shop owners are slimeballs. I'm in the process of opening an automotive garage and when the time comes to hire someone, I will pay them the most I can afford, based on their worth. As an employee, I topped out at $16.00/hr wage. As a flat rate tech (don't do it unless the shop is busy and has good service writers) I was at $18.00. The shop rates were $55.00, and $65.00 respectively. Out of that they had to pay my hourly rate, my FICA taxes, unemployment, workers comp, and other "benefits" mandated by law, plus any other benefits they saw fit. So all total, my $16.00/hour was more like $24-$32/hr, realistically.
I would think that any less than 1/3 of the shop rate, once you have proven yourself is too little, if you're top-rate. My rates were considered good for my area. I mean dealership techs were making a little more than I was, but in general, my $33K was the top of the range. I interviewed with Tuffy and a local muffler/front-end shop (BIG profit operations) and they were only talking $30/yr, and the other indy's I spoke with were talking the same. However a local cycle/ATV/light farm impement dealer was recently talking at a local gov't meeting that his techs make $40-45K.yr.

David, you are right that the wage is not the whole pay. Insurance is outta sight. Shops have to charge the high hourly rate to cover all the other expenses. Rent, utilities, liability insurance, etc...
