When I turn on my ignition key I get a 2 second alarm.
Is that brief alarm an indicator of a short? I read this in another post but can't confirm.

- I thought this was just like an automobile and the alarm was just an warning indicator that the ignition was on and the motor was going to start etc.

When the ignition key is turned on the buzzer goes off for 1 maybe 2 seconds, then turns off, I can hear the oil pump function properly, then motor starts fine.

That's my question but it is stemming from researching a possible temperature sensor problem.

I have a 1989 Champion and I put a new 2008 Mercury 150 EFI.

Installed and boat ran great all last year. I went out the other day and got the extended alarm when I was running the boat on plane. (temperature)
motor did not seem to be overheating. water stream was strong.
The alarm goes off if I pull the throttle back and take the boat down to crawl/idle.

After slow down I can not get the boat to rev up again past maybe 2k rpm's. ( safety mode)

I went ahead and changed impeller, water/fuel separator but I am not confident that either of those is the problem.
... this got me looking online at wiring and possible temp sensor issues.

In my process of deduction... if that initial "ignition key on" alarm is indicative of a temp sensor short then that is where I should begin testing & replacing parts.

The initial "key on" alarm is NOT an alarm ndication. It is "confirmation" that your alarm system is indeed functional. Absence of the key on tone is the time you start looking for problems. The Overheat (extended) alarm is not related to the alarm system at all. The overheat sensor tripped, grounding the the alarm system to tell you there was an overheat condition. The fuel/water separator has nothing to do with the alarm unless a clogged filter was causing the engine to run lean. Presence of a strong tell tale stream tells you the water pump is working but you can still have an overheat for a number of reasons. Plugged or restricted water flow in the cooling system, a bad or a bad thermostat can cause overheating as well. A thermostat stuck shut causes overheat at idle. A stuck or non-functional bypass valve causes overheat at higher rpm.

thanks.
so figuring out this problem....

X... I changed impeller

Is there a way to test the sensors with a multi-meter?

Is all of this managed at the motor?
meaning... could a loose wire or short up under the dash have an effect and cause the continuous alarm?

The road to the lake was 30 miles of bumpy dirt road and things got really shaken up.

"A stuck or non-functional bypass valve causes overheat at higher rpm"
how to test bypass valve?
