i have recently been given a 9.8 murcury, im not sure of the year but im guessing around 66-67, my question is the throttle linkage is off and i dont know how to adjust it, i turn the throttle and it doesnt engage the carb until the trottle is almost all the way open, thust only opening the carb about 10% of the way. none of the adjustments on the trottle seem to fix this. and also the threds for the spark plugs are stripped, can these be tapped, any advise would be great, thanks

Re: mecury 9.8 throttle problems

the throttle will only open the carb just so far and rotate the coils to move the timing up or down to control engine speed but it should be able to open the throttle plate (in the carb) at least 3/4 of the way. the threads for the plug can be repaired with a thread insert (any local machine shop should be able to install one for you)but don't let anyone fool you into installing a plug 'repair' insert. the difference is a thread insert is simular to a helicoil but is solid rather than wire like and the repair insert is like a plug fouler- it just screws into the head cutting new threads and then you install the plg into it (leaving it in the head)it will get you by but it is not a repair.
