Media Coverage

I'm having some difficulty with the media coverage of the Iraq conflict.
The media is with the military in some areas and they appear in general to be giving frank and open coverage, this is good.
On other occasions the media appears to be somewhat mercenary in their 'approach and seek out children' attitude with casualties.
In any conflict with weapons there is going to be wounded, civillian and military, the measure of how much and of which mix depends on the type of warfare carried out. In Iraq the Iraq forces appear to be playing the game of, 'wait till they come into Bagdad'. They are expert at combat in the concrete jungle and they'd expect to inflict a lot of casualties that way. This combined with the wearing of civillian clothing makes it even more difficult to identify them.
Thus my point about the media -
When the Coalition of the willing forces roll into Bagdad they are going to face the stiffest opposition yet, they will face a barrage from apparently civillian looking folk. They will fire back and this will result in the hospitals being filled with young Iraq men all injured, saying they were civillian. Get the media out of there before this stage. Their liberal minded reporting of all things even if designed to show the US, British and Australian forces in the best light, is false reporting and they need to be chocked out of this one.
Get them back to reporting for the coalition and showing the side of freedom.
Ross

Re: Media Coverage

I agree.

Also,if I were commanding inexperienced troops in a firefight, I sure wouldn't want the whole world arm chair quaterbacking my decisions or that of my troops.

Up until now, we've attempted to fight a “civilized” war. War, in my opinion, cannot be civilized. The idea of a surgical war, with minimum casualties and damage belies the seriousness of our opponents.

Although, we never intentionally target civilians, we can’t ignore important targets simply because this sick excuse for a human being puts them in civilian areas. The fact that innocent Iraqi people die in this engagement is upon Saddam Hussein’s head for putting the targets where he has, not on us for taking out the targets.

War is, and should be, hell. If war is hell, then perhaps the people most affected by this hell will be less inclined to support the people who got them into it.

The media can report the final outcome.

Re: Media Coverage

It's not going to happen.

The media is as just as "embedded" in this war, as is our military, as our leaders have planned.

The media is being used as both propaganda and truth, to shape policy (foreign or domestic), or to just attract viewers to their networks, to watch some stupid "reality" show, later.

The main problem is that this war is the ultimate "reality" show, that viewers cannot get enough of. The networks are only happy to oblige the demand.

What a war!

I, too, am outraged by the domestic media's ghoulistic lust to squeeze every last tear of drama from the sad, but predictable consequences of war.

This is not new, though. They fall on the bereaved and merely fearful like vultures on roadkill, "interviewing" with sad tones, asking incredibly stupid questions with no regard to their victims' privacy or dignity.

I really fear that this real-time, microscopic coverage of front line events is giving Saddam better intelligence than extensive covert operations could. . . and with color video, to boot.

Re: Media Coverage

I think reporting on the war is one thing but to interview the first casualties family including the sobbing voice of the mother goes too far. I feel that these media Ghouls are feeding on the perverse nature in human beings to enjoy others suffering. I also feel that the coverage given to extensive talks about the number of dead/wounded how it happened and all that stuff needs to stop because in this day and age where things that happen on TV are known to be fake and not real this much coverage trivializes the reality death in service of your country. This holds true when talking about troops from either side. I also think that showing civilian dead or wounded beyond a quick mention serves the enemy more than any armed division. Interviewing just one wounded child gives more fuel to the anti-war crowd than hundreds and hundreds of reports of the low number of civilian casualties due to technology. The number one method to get people to join your side or donate money to your cause is to show children suffering I think the media have forgotten this.

Re: Media Coverage

What they ought to do is take out Iraq's radio/TV and any other kind of communication they have.

If the head can't tell the rest of the body what to do, it stops.

Our media coverage does go to far.

Report the facts, period.

Don't give the opposing team anything they can use against you, physically or mentally.

All media should GET OUT in my opinion.

Our boys are doing their jobs, and it's going to get a lot nastier.

Yes, freedom of speech, but not in a war zone.

Let them do thier jobs.

H.

Re: Media Coverage

I torques me off when they keep saying how many of our lives were lost and gives reference that we are not winning. I can understand that our media cannot be on the other line to see the destruction and dead. But I wish they really were on the other line, then they would see who is really winning! Plus an extra target to shoot at.

I would think a good old stink bomb that was completely harmless would drive off those StuperHuman Shields. That would clear them out to take Mr. Cripple the rest of the way out. :D

Re: Media Coverage

How about a little irony?

As we sit here in front of our big-screen TVs, complaining about how the media is out of control, reporting on anything and everything, whether we want to hear it or not, slanted or factual, we have to think about our soon-to-be good friends, the Iraqi people.

They have Iraqi TV - period.

All the news your friendly Dictator wants you hear. They probably don't even know %1 of what's really going on, otherwise they would probably be cutting Saddam's throat right now.

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your view), you either have freedom of the press or you do not.

Marty
