I have a 90hp Evinrude Vro with the bottom right piston(while looking from the back)is trashed. While tearing it down I discovered a vacuum return hose split and came off on the same intake. Could this caused a meltdown failure with the Carb running lean maybe. I haven't checked the water pump yet, but that is a top priority when doing the rebuild. I'm on a tight budget with this one, Anyone have a suggestion on discounted parts, Thanks

Shallow.... A piston (#3 in your case) melt down could be caused by a lean running cylinder, and a faulty recirulating fuel hose would contribute to that. There are four (4) recirulating valves in the intake manifold.... replace them.

Also be sure to dismantle, clean, and rebuild the carburetors.

I would assume that there is embedded metal in the starboard cylinder head, if so, replace the head. It is impossible to remove all those small pieces of embedded metal, and while running, the metal particles would glow like the glow plug of a model airplane engine. That glowing would result in pre-ignition, which would result in a repeat of the problem.

Hi Shallow,
The best place that I have found for after market piston kits, and overhaul gasket sets is Southern Marine out of Little Rock, Ark.

Shallow,

Sure sorry about the problem(s) you have experienced.

On a more positive note, I want to use this opportunity to thank Joe Reeves (along with all the other seasoned veterans participating on this board) for their wisdom, knowledge, and willingness to share those qualities with us shade-tree wrenches and for helping us not to have to learn each lesson the hard way.
