I know this subject has been brought up on here before but since there is so many new members I was wondering who has fish tanks, what size are they and whats in them. I have a 55 gallon and 75 gallon.......One is an african cichlid tank and one is a south american cichlid tank. I have had 100s of gallons worth of tanks in the past and have done many different types of fresh water fish. Never salt. In my South American tank, I have a Jack Dempsy, a Texas cichlid, a Firemouth, A pike cichlid and a ummmm.....well a ummmm. Missouri cichlid (pumkinseed) :D

The African tank is pretty full but I have no idea what their names are due to the fact in all the stores I get my fish they use the scientific names for africans. We have a really good store here that specilizes in Africans but the guy only uses the technical names and is a purist in this field.

75 gal tank, lots of fish and plants. survival of the fittest... you die and you're replaced. some have been around since the tank was set up 5 years ago.

Re: Members with fish tanks

I've got a 55gal in my office right now with several types of corydoras (catfish) and about a zillion swordtails. I started with 13 swordtails, and now I have close to 200. I am in the process of putting a pond out in the yard and thats where the swordtails are going. That tank is so overly populated, I have 2 300gph filters running just to keep it oyxgenated and somewhat clean. The catfish are fun to watch since the tank has such a high current flowing in it.

I also have an empty 190 gallon tank in the garage that heading for the living room in the very near future. Thats going to be my Cichlid tank. I'm planning on stocking with Pseudotrophus Trewavasee, Hemihaplochromis Moorii, and Pseudotrophus Elongatus. Maybe even an auratus or 3. I've bred all 4 in the past so I'm familiar with them.

In my younger days I had 10 tanks and bred cichlids for a hobby. Primary the cichlids from the Lake Malawi region

Nav

Yes i do use my digital to weigh him :D

Must say JB has the best aquarium though.

Re: Members with fish tanks

thats what my screen name is all about. fishkeeper with out the vowels. i have had aquariums since i was in 6th grade. for awhile it was an obsession. i had about 15 or so tanks going at once. i would see a fish at the store and want it well it would not go with what i had so i had to set up awhole new system. got to be expensive and a real lot of work. i have had all kinds of fresh water, from gold fish. to the common tropicals. from south american and african cichlids to wisconsin native fish. did the reef tank thing and a few different salt water tanks from lion fish to sea horses. right now i just have a 125 gallon tank that is fresh water. but i have getting the itch to set up a 40 gallon long tank with salt water. first tho i am redoing my fresh water tank. so Jeff i think i have a fish that would fit right in with your tank, its a black belt cichlid. real pretty blue color big and mean enough to hold its own against any other fish. he is about 14 inches or so. i am at the point where i want to redo my tank and set up for africans again. so i am looking for a home for this guy. anybody wants him can have him. heres a couple pics
Got a 45 gal hex tank with one cichlid. One of the prettiest yellow specimens I've ever seen. Had a blue one as well but ol' yeller took 'em down! Little turd even took out my placo. I guess he's about 5-6 years old. Tried saltwater years ago but it was just to expensive and that stuff gets everywhere. Plus the little fella I got now is as colorful as any saltwater fish, I'll just have to accept that it's HIS tank and nobody else's. ;)

spots

Re: Members with fish tanks

I've had a bunch of tanks over the last 20 years or so, all freshwater fish. I used to go for the cool tropicals that got too big for their tanks and had to find them homes. I had Piranhas, Oscars, Clown Knifes (those are hearty fast growers and fun to feed goldfish too :D ). I had real good luck with Severums and Convicts and even had them laying eggs but never got any hatchlings.

I don't spend nearly the time on fish as I used to. Right now I've got a 37 and a 29 on a stacked stand. The 37 is full of little Tetras and Platys and a big ol' Pleco. The 29 has a Pumkinseed that I raised up from the size of my thumbnail. He's one of the cooler fish I've had, smart, aggressive, and pretty. He eats out of my hand and begs when he's hungry by smacking the top of the water. He and one of my cats have some sort of rivalry going on too.

I like the look of a tank without a lid on top. I had a nice setup with a tracklight above the tanks using PAR halogen bulbs over the open top of the tank on a timer. It looks like sunlight shining in and I even had some live plants growing up out of the water.

Re: Members with fish tanks

Hey, I like this thread! Thanks M&R.
I used to have a 240 gal tank in my bedroom when I was a teen, I had to sell it when I joined the Army. I had all kinds of fish in there. From natives to tropical and everything in between.
Once I started working and had a family I was too poor and too busy for fish. After I moved to Las Vegas about 3 years ago I saw a 120 gal tank on display, and decided to buy it. When I moved to California about a year ago, I took the tank with me but sold the fish back to the fish store. Now I have some Pangasius cats, pictus cats. gold nugget pleco, big spot pleco, bala sharks, pearl gourami, bosemans rainbow fish and some swordstails. I'll post pics later when I can find them.

No problem Kalian,Is one of my favorite subjects. :)

Cn spots it sounds as if you have an african cichlid........can be quite territorial. I also have a bright yellow/orange african about 4-5 inches and mean as can be. I bet Navagator could maybe tell us what they are :D

Re: Members with fish tanks

I've currently got a 55 cichlid tank, another 55 cycling, and a 10gal with cichlid fry. I guess my next adventure will be a 125 marine..fish only with live rock to start then later go to full reef setup. I love keeping the fish. Kindof a neat hobby, and once you get the run of your system down and get to know your fish, it's not to hard to maintain. The kids love it too, especially watching the cichlid fry grow. FYI, a lot of cichlids are mouth-brooders, which makes it easy to transfer fry to another tank....just simply transfer the female to another tank while she's holding the fry, and wait. Now I've got about 25 fry I don't know what to do with! The last hatch, I didn't bother transferring the female, but one amazing lived thru it and is now about an inch long.

Re: Members with fish tanks

yep thats why i love africans. they are colorful and are always fighting and breeding. and watching them protect the eggs and then the fry is very interesting. i love the mouth brooders the best.i never worried about transferring the mother or the fry, i make sure my tank has lots of caves and hiding places and let nature take its course. usually on or two will survive. had some shell dwellers that were really cool. they took up residence in old snail shells, these were africans also. if you described the yellow fish alittle more in detail i am sure we could identify it.
