Memorial Day

This is what Memorial Day is about. It is a day for solemn remembrance of our lost heroes.

I don't object if you choose to honor our Veterans and serving military, but here is one Veteran who would rather be thanked on Veterans Day (11/11/11) and see our war dead honored on this day.

Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a day for everyone to honor those who made the Ultimate Sacrifice for the freedom we have today. The United States of America was not given to us. Our freedom was not simply something that happened that way. It was earned with the blood and lives of "The American Soldier"

The soldier, the true warrior does not want, wish nor pray for war. The soldier prays for peace... and trains for war.

A soldier wants, like anyone else, to go home to family... and friends, loved ones, everyone and everything having ever touched their lives in any way.

A soldier understands that lives taken or given will never again have that priveledge.

To every American soldier who made The Ultimate Sacrifice... I Salute You... I Honor You... I Salute and Pray for You... and for your family, loved ones, and anything and everything which ever touched your life and mattered to you. I Thank You for the sacrifices you've made.

To every American Soldier... Past, Present, and Future... I Salute You.

I really don't understand this greeting.

I hear it on the radio, and when I go into stores. There is nothing "happy" about Memorial Day. To me, it is a day to remember and honor those who have served our country, many giving their lives in doing so. It is a solemn holiday.

Sure, a lot of people have the day off and people do have parties. Families get together. But please be sensitive the real meaning and how people may feel who have lost others close to them or made other life-changing sacrifices to defend our principles.

People gave there lives so that we can throw those parties. I totally get your point about it being a solemn holiday though.

You're right, but my only point is, let's not lose our focus of the reason of the holiday.

I think its a Rule that if you have a day that lets you take off work,get drunk,be reckless and endanger fellow human beings Must have "Happy" proceeding the holiday name.

I agree with the op .. its sad that most of the newer generation has no clue why we observe today ( or simply dont care ).

Well in the area I live here in Montana, I can assure you the meaning of the day is not lost, all the way down to the youngest of children, the people around here to have BBQ's and parties, as well as parades for Memorial Day, but one thing, you will not find a resting place of a military person without a flag, and you won't find people thinking it is just a holiday. We honor those who have served and given so much. I will be giving a talk later this afternoon about my experiences in the military to a group of high school kids and their parents.

I can admit that the meaning of this day was lost for me when I was younger. I have no relatives that were in the military. When I grew up my best friend was driving a hummer in Iraq that took a direct hit from a rpg. While I won't go into details let's just say he walked away with no permanent injuries, others in that hummer were not so lucky.

Even if you hate war and the government. Even if you are against the foreign policies of this country. You had better damb well respect our soldiers and the job they do.

Just to clarify: Memorial Day is to honor U.S. Service Members who died while in the military service. It's not the same as Veterans Day.

You know what burns me is when the flag is suppose to be at half staff and it all the way up.

On Memorial Day the flag is displayed at half staff until noon and at full staff from noon to sunset.

To place the flag at half staff, hoist it to the peak for an instant and lower it to a position half way between the top and bottom of the staff. The flag is to be raised again to the peak for a moment before it is lowered.

Last year we had a soldier killed in Iraq locally and the governor order the flag at half staff. I had all I could do to refrain from lowering it myself.

I'm sorry but if you want to display a flag- do it correctly.

For flags that can't be lowered, such as those on many homes, the American Legion says that attaching a black ribbon or streamer to the top of the flag is an acceptable alternative. The ribbon should be the same width as a stripe on the flag and the same length as the flag.
For a wall mounted flag, three black mourning bows should be attached to the top edge of the flag, one at each corner and one in the center.
