Ok. heres whats crackin'.1963 Merc1000. Rebuilt with new fuel pump kit, carb rebuild kit, coils, wires, plugs, checked ignition ballasts(Good), new gaskets for distrubutor cap, body, upper and lower cowls, points. didn't touch water pump or anything in lower unit for that was not the problem before, and as far as i remember it did "pee". Motor ran for the first time in 3 months after rebuilding. Ran beautifully until out of the no wake zone all of a sudden motor stops and smoke was pouring out from the whole thing and just before it putted out noticed that there was no water "peeing" from the motor. I did run it a few times in the garage with the hose hooked up to the intake. Low water pressure but still some water going in. Out of fear of totally wrecking motor, got towed in and motor was raging hot and smells funny. I am assuming it is the water pump. What do i do now? Could I have wrecked what I have already fixed? All the help already much appreciated. Any more much appreciated as well. Also I do not see a "pee" hole, does it come out of where the exhaust does? Thanks-dunc

id check my compression to start first buddy, if you overheated it, you may have scorched the cylinders or pistons or rings or ......well you get the rest. if that check out and not more that 15psi apart on any cylinder, id drop that gearcase and do a w/p. and dont shortcut it either, change the entire thing housing and all..keep us infoed and good luck

The pee-hole on that is in the belly-pan itself. In fact the pee-hole starts in the botom of the powerhead and proceeds through tthat lower cowling. It might be clogged, you can clear it with a wire.

Never, EVER run a motor that isn't peeing properly at idle. With all the work you did to it, replacing the waterpump impeller should have been SOP. A compression test will tell the tale.

It's not that you wrecked what you fixed, it that you may have fried the powerhead.

-W

Hey Tijuana, glad to hear it ran allright, sorry about your new problem, it sure sounds like a water pump. A good rule of thumb is if you have a hose hooked to the engine and the engine not running but have water coming out the telltale, you have a bad impeller,(the water is bypassing the fins) if the flow increases when you start the motor the impeller has a set in the blades, but still needs replaceing---Bob

Tijuanatimes:
When you replace the impellor-hopefully that's all you need-check the engagement of the round key on the drive shaft by twisting the impellor and holding the shaft. It's one of Merc's poorer ideas. The round key on mine had to be supersized a long time ago to maintain drive torque to the impellor. It takes a lot!!
