hey everybody,

i just joined this forum because yesterday i picked up a new boat and motor, a 12ft aluminum w/merc110 9.8 and a trailer for 1000$, it was a sweet deal. anyway the guy started the motor, and it ran ok but i had my doubts so i called a mechanic, and he said my exhaust was blocked, because it bubbles like crazy, and also it will only **** when you get the revs up. is this an easy fix? i'm pretty good w/fixing things, but i don't wanna get in over my head. also i noticed oil leaking from the prop shaft, probably the seal, big repair? special tools?the serial number is7103012, any thoughts on the year?

alotta questions i know, thanks in advance for any hepl

What do you mean "bubbles like crazy"? It's normal for a lot of bubbles to come out of the prop if that's what you mean. That's were the majority of the exhaust comes out, out of the prop, under the water.

Regarding the weak tell tale stream: it should flow pretty well at idle, a little stronger at higher RPMs. No matter what, as a routine maintenance item, first thing you should do is rebuild the water pump, or at least replace the rubber water pump impeller. IT's not a difficult job, but like most things, tricky the first time you do it. If you have a shop do it, it's very cheap, about 1/2 hour of shop time plus parts, unless there's a problem (like frozen bolts, etc.).

Oil leaking around the prop shaft could be just the residue from oily exhaust that comes out in that area.

If you're familiar with the distinctive smell of gear lube, does it smell like that? What does it look like?

Did you check and replace the lower unit gear lube? How did it look? That should be something you routinely do.

Have you run it in the water? How does it start, idle, accelerate, full speed, etc?

There's some model / serial number guides for Mercs on line. I dont' have one bookmarked right now, but if you use yahoo, etc. to search, you'll find one pretty easily.

Good luck.

It's Canadian built, 1977...

If you're going to be doing your own work on it, then may I suggest you buy a manual for it. The Merc part number is 90-75512 and I don't recommend anything but the genuine manual... Too many ambiguities with the others...

Amazon have a couple for $19.99 (http://www.amazon.com/Service-Manual-Mercury-Outboards-C-90-75512/dp/B000H8KBO0)
Boulevard Books http://www.boulevardbooks.com/si/19184.html

The manual explains exactly what needed to do the jobs you're looking at and what special tools, if any are needed. The water pump impellers on those engines don't like sitting around doing nothing for too long... If it doesn't pump water at low speed, that would be the first place I'd look... after I buy the manual....
