Is this motor worth rebuilding?<br />It has set (Power head, not broken open) for a couple of years and is frozen. How much would rebuilding one cost? (Will be doing it myself.)

Depends on how bad it is. If it needs to be bored it's about $40+ per cylinder plus about $100 for a new oversized piston. If it just needs a honing and some rings it's definately worth a rebuild.

3DMix, My '77 froze up a couple of times when layed up. It was always due to water from the cooling system entering the cylinder. It was easy to free up, oil and a tap on the piston through the spark plug hole. Then hone and new rings. Make sure you find out why it rusted up and fix it. Also, mine was always a single cylinder that rusted, the others were good. The hard repair was to find the water leak (usually the inner water jacket under the exhaust water jacket cover), and fix it.

I have a spare 79 6cyl ready to bolt up runs great just sitting in my garage. It is the powerhead only but has all electrical still connected. Let me know if you are interrested, compression is 142-148 in all 6 cyls, she runs great! I ended up with a sweet deal on a 85 powerhead and decided to go with a newer one.

As It turns out my Motor Is a 1971, if I read the www.maxrules.com chart correctly (serial # 3026419). Thnanks very much for your reply. If in fact the '79 motor will still bolt up please E-mail me with more info at 3DMix@inorbit.com. Again, thanks to you and all others that have replied.

It seems you are correct in that it is a 1971. Also I finally found some photos of the 1971 head and unfortunately it will not bolt up. If you happen to stumble into a 1973 or newer lower unit and mid section I have the powerhead for you. Good luck with getting back on the water!

I forgot to mention, it is a fresh water motor also. Very Clean, and it has been professionally rewired.
