I have a merc 115 , not sure of the year as I am still attempting to cross over the serial number.
2396328 (serial number taken from engine mount and may not be original as shroud is from a 90)

I have started the motor and it is missing on one cylinder (#3 I think)
When the engine is just over an idle I can see a little water dripping from
the spark plug. It does not seem to be under pressure , just a slow drip.

I pulled the plug and fired the engine , no water was forced out.

I plan on doing the rings , but the water has me thinking maybe the reeds
also need to be replaced. Or am I barking up the wrong tree ?

Just my luck , after not finding anything while searching I notice a few threads
of similar post listed at the bottom of the page.

Most of them mentioned the water jacket gasket.
Any other tips ? (first outboard I have owned)

As you have found out that water drip is from the waterjacket. Dry it out and put some silicone caulk on it to seal it while you fix the rest of the motor. If that motor has a distributor, it is 1979 1/2 or older. If it has 6 coils, it is newer than 1979 1/2.

Thank You Chris. The engine does have the distributor.

Off to order parts now.
