Yes, when you shift into forward it unlocks, reverse it locks, some of them also lock in neutral.

Craig

Yup, always have the motor off and in forward gear before you raise the motor up.

In addition, don't ever lower the motor onto the tilt pin unless you've shifted it into forward first.

Re: merc 1150 INLINE 6 : tilt pin question

This is how it works on a manual trim motor. There is a little plastic or alloy cam at the bottom of the shiftshaft. There is a pair of metal hooks with a rod resting on this cam. When in neutral, the cam turns lifting the rod and pivoting the hooks over the rod. This also occurs in reverse. When you select forward, the low side of the cam allows the springs to return the hooks to the retracted position. and releases the hooks. This is why care must be taken when re-installing the L/U after W/P service.Yours looks to be manual trim. Put it on forward, lock it up there and take a look up under the front of the L/U.. Do you see the hooks ? It's a good idea the clean them up and lubricate them. They can become corroded and cam jam up. This can cause stress on your shifter and cables.
