I have an older merc. on swivel bar at top has some kind of streering shaft going down inside that comes out but I was wondering how to take it off. is there an allen bolt down inside?

Welcome to iboats.<br /><br />Are you talking about the 5/16" shaft that's inside the tube where the motor turns left to right, or something in the tilt tube where the motor tilts up and down? The 5/16" shaft is the shift shaft. It's pinned to a lever at the top and to a splined socket at the bottom. To get the shaft out, you have to remove the powerhead to lift it from the top, or drive out the pin to drop it out of the bottom with the gearcase removed. That's a rare occurrance. They usually don't pose a problem. Why do you want to remove it?

It is the big tilt bar oh about an inch tread with 2 big nuts on it hollow inside from one end it has a treaded rod on one end with hole in rod and goes inside big hollow shaft
