Merc 170 and Alpha I - Shift Cable Question

All, (don't think this post went through the first time...sorry if it is duplicated).

Been a while since I've posted, but I finally got my boat ('86 Galaxy with Merc 170 engine and Alpha I outdrive) on the water this Spring. Have garnered lots of great info from this group...I thank all of you. Lot's of engine and outdrive work completed over the fall including water pump, bellows job and starter motor.

One of my main issues left to work on was the shift cable. I had to remove it to do the bellows job and thought I reconnected exactly as it was pre-bellows job. I did have the boat out in early April and could not get into reverse, the engine would just stall out. I checked the iBoats forums and got some info from previous posts on similar issues. Those responses, along with printed out shift cable adjustment instructions (Manual #6 - Section 2A-18 thru 24), made me think I was good to go. I went through the adjustment procedure with the boat out of the water and the earmuffs on the outdrive and thought I had everything set, the prop would lock rotating CCW in full-forward and would like in CW rotation with shifter in full reverse, as the instructions said.

Yesterday, the engine was shifting into forward easily but in reverse would just rev the engine and not engage into reverse gear. I tried moving the "barrel" on the shift cable back and forward with the only result being that I went from rev-ing in reverse to stalling out.

So, with this information, can anyone with experience please provide some insight or solution suggestion? Is it a bad shift cable (too much slack)? Am I moving the barrel on the shift cable connection to the engine at too large of increments (i.e. is there some "sweetspot" I am passing by)? Is it better to adjust while on the water or out of the water with the mufffs on to allow for rotating the prop into locked position?

Any information is greatly appreciated!

If you can hang fire for a few days, I'll be doing a video on shift cable adjustment, and checking for excess slop in the system...
Nice to see you back...

Chris........

achris...thanks for the response and for the commentary, but for reference, the video is hard to see and I think would be better filmed (isn't it funny we still use that term when no "film" is involved?) from the side to be better able to see what you are doing. I went through this procedure, but to be honest did not do much adjustment on the remote control cable, so I will try it.

I had a halide lamp set up and that may be why the picture is 'washed out' a bit. I'll have another go tomorrow with just a fluoro set up and see if that's any better. I may also knock up some cue cards for myself, just so I don't forget anything, and do it all in the right order... :D

Thanks for the feedback...

Hmmm...my last reply seems to have disappeared. If you haven't already done the video, perhaps you can disconnect both the shift cable and remote cable and show the whole procedure?

Another thing, to your knowledge, has anyone ever tried setting up a Skype video chat or Facetime chat to walk someone through the procedures? Would be very cool and FUN!

Chris,

Just responded to your private message. LEt's try the Skype if we can find a time.

As for the video, much clearer!! I could follow it easily. I could however see that someone who doesn't know what "locking" the prop means may need more info. I personally am clear on that and use a bungee chord to lock it in CCW rotation. I have attached a picture below of my shift plate. I do not have an adjustable barrel on my remote cable, as you can see.

Drew.. That remote shift cable (not the lower shift cable) looks like a Morse cable with a Merc adapter on it. You adjust the end of the cable. You'll see that the very end red piece is screwed on... Use that for your 4 turns back...
