Hi everyone,

first of all, please excuse my english, cause i'm french speaking (Canada), but i'll do my best.

I had the chance to buy a 1987 Mercury Sailpower 210cc (i think it's 8 hp) with a long shaft, manual start and tiller handle shifter at a fair price and it's exactly what i'm looking for as a kicker on my 1993 Tracker Pro Deep-V 17 beside my Mercury 60 Classic ELPTO 1993.

Finally, my question is: is this a good, reliable outboard? From what i find on the Net, they doesn't seem to produce it for a long time (only 4 years) and there's not a lot of them in the market (ads, e-bay, etc.).

Thanks for your input.

Steve

Re: Merc. 210cc Sailpower...few advice needed

Anybody know this engine?

I finally buy it. Little bit of water in the gear case. Probably caused by a stripped vent plug. I plan to fix it with heli-coil and Loc-Tite and then run it to see if other seals are ok. Motor run and idle fine. Compression checked cold at 70 for both cylinders...Seem low but, again, run fine and start easily on first pull.

Can someone tell me what's the difference between it (Sailmaster) and the regular Merc. 8 hp. Is there's something special for saltwater use or a different prop?

I'm also looking for the recommendend plugs and correct gap.

For reading this forum from a long time, i know there's a lot of experts here. I'm pretty sure there's a least one or two of them who ever touch this particular model.

Thanks.

Oups, one more question that i forgot!

(Remember that English wasn't my native langage...)
Bolted onto the shift rod, there's a little black plastic piece (1"x1") that lift up the tilt/lock lever or bracket(i really don't know how you name it) when the shifter is in the forward position only.

I understand why it has to be locked down when in reverse (pretty obvious), but i want to know if it's possible to slide this piece approx. 1 in. up onto the shift rod, thus causing the unit to be possibly tilted when in neutral. Is there's any reasons why i souldn't do this?

Thanks again for taking time to read.
Steve
Montreal, QC
Canada

Hello Steve: I believe the only differnce is the shaft length, that little plastic release, is designed to allow the engine to kickup, when in fwd gear(incase you strike something).
NGK BP8H-N-10 for the sparkys.
P.S, Your english seems fine to me.

Thanks a lot for the information.

As for the little plastic release, i just want to know if it's a good idea to move it approx 1 in. up along the shift shaft in order to allow the engine to be tilted up in neutral also?

Cant really see the advantage of it tilting it in neutral, but heck its your engine
