I don't know. I would install using the gasket called for in the parts manual and see what happens. You'll know very quickly whether you need the thicker gasket-- the engine runs terrible and fuel leaks profusely.
If you have a maintenance manual, note that there is a very precise specification for the push rod movement: .334 inches. The movement of that rod has a direct effect on the pressure output of the pump. The way the Merc phone rep explained it to me is that the source for their pumps simply doesn't get pump lever positioned exactly the same as the OEM pumps did when our antique engines were manufactured. So, if the pump you have is like that, the thicker gasket compensates. As I said in the thread to which I posted the link, the Merc rep was completely familiar with the problem. He didn't even have to think about it.
