Long story short, new to boating, piecing together a 14ft aluminum fishing boat for the family. Got a 1984 merc 25hp control motor for free.

Found out it needed a powerpack and bought one (spark only 1 cyl) Now spark on both.

Motor has controls and are no good to me in a 14ft alum fish boat. Found and bought a tiller handle today and installed it.

Only problem is it has 2 wires coming out of it (guessing for kill switch) and i don,t know where they go. My controls have a big plug (roughly 9 pin) to plug into to make the key be the kill switch.

What i,d like to know is where do i connect the eye connector and where do i plug the bullet type connector.

Motor has starter and pull start but i,ll only use pull start and no battery connected so i only need to have it set up for the handle kill switch to work.

Thanks for any help for this new boater.

I have a 25 xd 1985ish .Bullett conector should go to black with yellow stripe wire (coming from switch box ) it should have nothing connected to it now untill you make this connection and ring connector ground on the block.I am guessing you have the switch box with bullett connectors ?

Does either of yer engines have a square choke knob or a round one?

How do you increase engine speed for a cold start?

Thanks. JR

My switchbox has pin type conectors (6 total)

I have a square choke, haven,t ever ran the motor so can,t comment on engine speed.

Thanks! Does the choke have two settings halfway out and all the way out?

My choke only has 1 setting that clicks in and thats full out.

Kill switch now works with black/yellow stripe splice in. Thanks.

My choke is a three position...
All in (Normal run)
Mid Pos(Fast Idle)
Full Out(Enricher)

Fast Idle is via a wire linkage to the throttle and is increased by closing the round toothed plastic connector on the choke knob assembly.Jim

Thanks very much that explains how it werks! Now I may use it for a cold water engine in the winter.

One more question: Does either of your engines have the second kill switch on the starbord side of the power head?

FYI: (My 1989 25 and my 1996 25 have the second switch at the center front of the engine with round choke knobs that ya twist ta increase engine speed).

Thanks for the help. JR
