MY 4.3 starts okay but smokes a little bit, and after running for a while it will be difficult to start. I have to push the throttle wide open to get it running. Also occasionally, usually when I'm docking, it will stall.

One mechanic says it is simply the carb, but another says it most likely is valves.

The mechanic I used to use, but can't because the current marina has an exclusive contract with a mechanic service, says he's never heard of valve issues in a 4.3 merc.

What do you who know about these engines have to say?

Sounds like you're rich and flooding out to me. Your WOT hot starts are about getting enough air and not fuel. Is the back of your boat all covered with carbon near the exhaust?

I don't think there is any carbon. But the exhaust is through the prop, I believe.
