Merc 4.3LX Reverse when partially tilted

My 1995 Merc 4.3 LX will grind and not engage in reverse properly when it is 1/2 way tilted (or more). Down or in any trim mode it is fine. It has 600 hours on it and has been trouble free. There is never any metal on the magnet when I service it, so I don't think anything is worn out. My guess is, the cable may need adjusted to allow a "little more reverse". The only thing that makes me hesitate is, when it was new, we had many tries and attempts to get the shifting cables/system adjusted properly as to prevent stalling (due to the cut out). Mine has the spring loaded shift assist cylinder. Any thoughts from a boat mechanic? Is this common? Maybe this is normal when shifting a tilted unit, but keep in mind it is not tilted anywhere near the full up position. It is more like if you are in shallow water, or where you might have it tilted for loading off and on the trailer. Any info from a qualified tech that works on these everyday would be great! Well,.......

There's a Reason that they put a Trim Limit on outdrives,.......
I By-passed mine years ago,... And,.. I sometimes run it higher than I should,.....
I Also replace the U-joints more often,....And I Know it's Very Hard on Every Single part that has to Make That Bend,......
That Includes the Shift Cable.......

My point is,... You Can't expect much when you're Knowingly running it Out side of design spec......

You Might be able to get another lap out of it with some Adjusting,.......
I'm thinking you'll end up biting the bullet,+ Replacing the Whole Cable Kit................

Tilted half way (or more)and (not tilted up any where near the full up position) seems to be a conflict of terms.

DHP
