Does Merc build their own and if you own one, would you buy another? Thanks

Re: Merc 4-strokes

Greetings to my brother from behind the redwood curtain. Merc and Yamaha have had a long standing relationship but in the last few model years Merc has gone it's own way with their 4 strokes.Carbueration, in my opinion, is over complicated, and prone to failure. If you are contemplating buying one make sure the deal includes a water separator.

Re: Merc 4-strokes

I've had my Merc 90 4 stroke for 2 seasons and I like it. It's a good engine. It's quiet, powerful and easy on gas, if you keep it under 5000 rpm.

I wouldn't go back to a 2 stroke if you paid me!

My next one would be a merc as well but I'd make sure it's fuel injected, not carbureted.

Re: Merc 4-strokes

I have a 2001 90 Merc 4 stroke and have had the following problems:

Replaced the "brain"
Replaced the oil pump
Rebuilt the carberators

I am a recreational fisherman who puts probably 200 - 300 hours anually and take exeptional care of my boat and motor. I run her pretty easy but like to open up once in a while. Occansionally pull a skier. I would have bought something fuel injected if I had to do it over again.

Re: Merc 4-strokes

I have twin 225HP Merc 4-stokes on a 30ft Center Console. The big engines are made by Yamaha, and if you look the specs up on the web they are identical. I had a 1 recall on both engines due to a throttle lock up condition, which I did have the pleasure of experiencing. Other than that I am very pleased with the engines - I'm getting about 4.5 GPH @ 3500RPM per engine... At 45MPH you can have a conversation at the console with no problem...
Keep an eye out for the New Merc Project X engine that will be their own product - initial reports are positive. here's an article: http://www.bassresource.com/news/mercury_projectx.html

Re: Merc 4-strokes

The answer to the first part of your question "Does Mercury build their own 4 strokes?" is it depends on the size of the engine. My '03 Mercury 115HP EFI 4 stroke has a powerhead built by Yamaha. My '03 Mercury 25HP ELPT 4 stroke Big Foot is all Merc.

Would I buy another? Not only would I, I did... :)
