Hi there, I just posted this in the mercury repair section, but i guess thats not the right forum, so here goes again... Just trying to id my merc 402. The serial is 7177879. Ive been searching around quite a bit, and cant find anything on it. The serials for this model seem pretty confusing, with some early years running al the way from 3xxx to 9xxx. Any help is greatly apreciated. Also, had a quick prop question. Just wondering what the most pitch i can get for this motor is. Im going to be pushing an extremely light 11 foot boat, so i dont want to over rev the motor. Ive found 17 pitch, but was wondering if these props are at all interchangeble with bigger HP's, and will getting a bigger diameter help me? Thanks in advance.

Re: Merc 402 Year?

looks to me like a 1972 2 cylinder from belgium.

Serial number: 3339688 - 9005203 year: 1972 type: 2 cyl Belg.

Re: Merc 402 Year?

:) Im pretty confident its not from belgium, but then, stranger things have happened. To be honest, i dont even think its a model 402. I think its a model 40 as it sais 40HP on the side and 402 on the back, whereas i think 402s had just 402 on both. I think its a 1981 Canadian Edition, but this is what i mean about confusion as to the serial numbers, it could be any number of things. It was sold by a big dealer to the guy i bought it off as an 86. Pretty frusterating.
