Thank you, will have a look and see. When taking the lower apart to find the issue can all the seals be re-used when putting it back together?

Thinking about just removing the shift shaft and making it a forward only motor :)

You can't reuse the seals (they get boogered when you remove them), and there is no seal available that I know of to eliminate the shift shaft hole. The shift mechanism should be very simple and if you're willing, should be no problem to take the lower unit apart if need be to get it shifting. If you plan on using this motor for a long time, it would be good to replace those old seals either way. A well-sealed lower unit is nice to have. I think Mercury liked to use reverse threads on the carrier nut, if it has one.

Thanks to lots of help, I ordered up all the seals I need (and then some), new clutch spring, and a new impeller kit. Also got a complete shifter assembly. Now I wait for lots of little boxes and envelopes so I can get it ready for the river. As long as I don't end up needing bearings I should be good.
