Merc 50 Power Trim Help

Hi there. Please bear with me as I'm not exactly sure what I'm talking about.

I have a Merc 50 Serial no. 6097907 I think it's an 82.

This motor came with Power Trim but no pump.

I picked up a Mercruiser pump and am having trouble getting the hoses figured out.

The rams have 2 hoses each with what I would call brake line fittings.

The pump has one port that uses the brake fitting (I'm assuming that's the high pressure)
and a port that uses a larger compression style fitting with a clear plastic tube.

I have a mercruiser rmanifold that will take the lines from the Rams and one of the lines from the pump.

How do I or what do I need to get a line from the low pressure port on the pump to the manifold?

Sorry if this is confusing but it's the best I can do right now. I'll try and get pics.

Marc, that Mercruiser pump probably doesn't have the correct lower valve body on it. The pump itself will work, but the valve body doesn't have enough ports. That plastic tubing you are speaking of goes to the reverse gear lock-out...it comes off of the end of that lower valve body from a brass fitting and then theres 2 hydraulic line hook ups...thats Mercruiser...Mercury outboard pumps have a lower valve body that has 4 hydraulic ports...two large and two small threaded ports...the pump will work but you will have to change lower valve bodies.

Re: Merc 50 Power Trim Help

Thanks for the very prompt reply - and the good information.

Lucky for me I think I have and old outboard pump at the lake with a bad motor.

Hopefully I can switch the parts around.

Thanks again monk-monk

Marc, the valve body you need has the knurled knob on it...thats the reverse lock mechanism for outboards, it can be screwed in and out to either engage or disengage the reverse lock. If you feel you have the mechanical ability, the valve body can be disassembled, cleaned and new o-rings can be installed. If you are interested in doing that...i would be glad to give a few tips...it has a lot of springs, o-rings and check balls inside...BE CAREFUL there..!!

Re: Merc 50 Power Trim Help

Thanks, I may take you up on that offer.

I believe it is the motor that is shot on the old outboard pump.
I'll swap the motors and see if that gets me going.

If not I'll be back asking for your help. Either way I'll update the post.

Thanks again.

Re: Merc 50 Power Trim Help

Well I think I need more help.
I'm at the lake and find that the old pump is in pieces in a bucket.

I've attached a picture. I'm calling the part on the Left the Gear Assembly, and the part on the Right the Valve Body.

For the time being I'd like to put this Outboard Valve Body onto the Mercruiser pump I bought.

I need to know if I take the Valve Body off do I have anything other than o-rings to deal with. I don't want to take it off if there are any springs or balls to keep track of. I'm not in a good environment for that kind of work.

I'm hoping that all the tricky stuff is in the Valve Body itself.

thanks

Update. Took it off and no surprises.

Going to install it and see what happens.

Re: Merc 50 Power Trim Help

Final update I hope.

It works fine. Once I realized the rectangular plate with the holes in it in the bucket of parts had to go between the valve body and the pump that is.

Thanks monk-monk for pointing me in the right direction.
