Merc 60 Hp shaft spline damage ?

Hi
I have a Merc 60 hp 2008 big foot.
Boat has been used by many different drivers and there has been several problems with the remote control.

Latest problem was that gear didnt engaged.
I took the cables off and shifted manually when engine was running but no turning.

I took the shaft out from gear box but in didnt see any damages but now im worried about the top end of the shaft to crank shaft.
The spine is twisted. Is it normal ?
My other engines it has always been straight.


Is there any couplings between the crank shaft and shaft to gear house.

Ayuh,.... Not only twisted, but it's busted Off....

The rest of the shaft is probably still in the end of the crankshaft...

Is the spline that short to Crankshaft.
No coupling between ?

Do you know appr. the length.

What could be a price of a shaft second hand market. ?

This is what the drive shaft looked like before broke spline area you can zoom the pic to the spline area Mercury Drive Shaft Pinion Reverse Forward Gears with The Shift Shaft | eBay If it was my situation I woud first pull the powerhead and see if i could coax the DS splined section out of the crankshaft if it wouldn,t come I would PB weld a long bolt or peice of steel to the slined shaft or tap the shaft for a puller which would be the best way. Then check the crakshaft for broken missing twisted splines. If all looked good I would inspect the base for damage (Replace if affected). Then I would search for a lower unit off ebay as it may be cheaper and easier than trying to rebuild the one you have.

Shaft is cheap but lots to do... to get the powerhead off.
I will test my nerves on the Merc...

hardest part is getting the top of the shaft out of the crank shaft and hopefully see no damage. That is my DS in the add but it,s less than perfect but usable. I,ve had to take my powerhead off at least 6 times in two months during the rebuild and finding other issues like the dang thing was possesed by a demon. It,s not too dificult just take pictures of all angles before removing componants so you have a guide to replace them.
