ok, got it together but the shift seems to be off. i tried to index it upon removal but something must have moved. i assume i have to drop it a bit to realign the shaft. any ideas??? how to etc???? also i marked the brass type lift piece that encircles the shift shaft. is that a possible cause??? thank you in advance

One thing that was not mentioned and is important is which way you put the shift cam back on. It will go on either way bit there is an upper and lower side. Some are marked and some are not. If you put it on correctly and things are still not right you might just have to turn it further around until you get it in the right position. It may have just gone past and be pushing against the cam follower from the back-side.

Re: Merc 650 lower unit repair (newbie)

I had a similer problem and it baffled me for awhile until I did some sectioned trouble-shooting. The lower unit shifted fine by hand, the cable on the shifter was adjusted fine, but wouldn't go completely in reverse so I eliminated those two which put the problem in-between. I figured the only thing left was the coupler and sure enough, it had worn splines. I replaced it and everything works like new...
