i just bought a 73 bomber bass boat with a 650 mercury thunderbolt. i knew the guy and we used it alot so i knew it ran. it runs quite strong and starts easier than my glasstream with an 88 rude. anyhow could i have some info on the merc and/or boat. the only complaint is it leaks oil out of the foot if you change the enigine position. it has no power trim so the motor just stays down the whole time. but if i do pull it up say to get it out the water, oil bubles up for about 30 seconds. am i about to lock up the lower unit?

Have you tried running this on muffs, what does the oil in the LU look like (milky? problem)You might just have fuel mixture and air in the exhaust that is bubbling up, as these motors are gas a holics.

Rick

I think RICKRICK1 has it right. Check the lower unit for water and lube level. Lube should be at the upper vent plug. If no water and lube level is o-k, what you're seeing is unburned premix leaking out the exhaust.

c/6

Hooty

Re: merc 650

sorry for the delay
i have been unable to get the boat out for the last few days. it has rained buckets here and the yard is mush. anyhow i believe that it is some gas. oil seems to hold shape longer than gas on the water, and gas is something it drinks. i couldnt believe the mileage compared to an engine almost twice its size. but heck $400 and the motor was built about 5 years ago. in those five years its been on a 300 ac lake and mostly sat up. ill check that foot as soon as i can.
