Merc 7.5 to 9.8 hp upgrade

What is the difference between a 1982 merc 7.5hp and the 9.8hp? The only difference I can find is the carb housing and main jet(.039 on the 9.8 and .040 on the 7.5). Can it be "upgraded" with a carb change or just the main jet?

I'm pretty sure the 9.8 is a pumped up 7.5 hp. You could try changing the carb to a 9.8. (Possibly the exhaust housing may be different)
