Merc 9.8 - Carb Flooding Problem

I have a Merc 9.8 that floods out and I cannot figure out why. The gas pours from the bronze tube at the front of the carb when the tank is connected and the engine running...it soon floods and dies. I have taken the carb apart - perfectly clean (stored dry every year). I have rebuilt with a new carb kit. The float appears to be working with no barrier to moving up and down. With carb off the engine, it seems the float does move up and down per design. Arghhh! Any help will sincerely be appreciated.

More information - soaked carb in cleaner, checked to ensure float would in fact float...it did, checked to ensure that the pin would seat properly as float lifted...it did.

So, this isn't the usual didn't clean the engine type of problem, or, I am dumber than I think:)

What year is the motor? Did you set the float height ?

Re: Merc 9.8 - Carb Flooding Problem

The model is a 110, I believe the year is about 1978. How do you set the float height? I assume it is too low even when the float is in the up position, which enables the continued flow of gas...
