Hi guys...first time poster here...great site.
Just purchased a Merc model 110 9.8 hp long shaft serial # 4240718. Im thinking this is around a 1975, but im not positive. The motor has been sitting for 2-3 years.
After some new gas and a 50:1 mix, here is what i found. When runnin this in barrel,
1. Started after 10 pulls.
Idle was "ok" nothin great , little rough
"pee-hole " would spit streams after 20 seconds when i gave it gas ,nothin at idle. Im a little scared about the impeller.
Motor was warm not very hot to touch after 10 minutes.no where near a lawn mower engine temp.

2. When i pulled off lid there was foam all lined in the hood. it seems as though gas ate it like styrofoam, made it sticky in some areas and brittle to the touch. Did i do this in 10 minutes or was this like this ? will removing the liner hurt anything ?

3. Now the hard part. With motor lid off. when looking at the throttle arm, it seems like there is an "extra" something bolted onto the back of this arm, where the shaft make a turn upwards in side the hood....it has a cotter pin to hold it in place but i cant see anywhere it could possible connect too. It has a shaft of about 1/4" dia. about 1 " long pointing up. when giving the motor throttle it just flaps back and forth. is this possible to be a spare part ? i cant seem to find one like it anywhere.
Sorry for not knowing any technical terms.

I will get the manual as soon as i know what year this is. Thanks in advance for the help.

Bow

yeah the guy should replace the impellor, drain all old gas, put new gas in with double the oil mixture and some carb and choke cleaner, mixed in with it. befor starting the motor, he should clean the carb out then he should run the motor WOT until he is out of gas, that should fix things

1975.
Don't have a clue about the foam. Most outboards do have a lining in the cowling to help with noise supression.
As far as the linkage is concerned, can you post a pic?
After sitting for a length of time, carbs tend to varnish over and internal components stick. Try a rebuild kit and a complete and thorough cleaning.
Check all water passages for obstructions.
Impellors are cheap and easy to install.
Let us know how you make out.

Hi Bow,
I'm guessing your motor was at one time hooked up for remote throttle/steer and that bit of linkage is the leftover from when the cables got removed...
As for the liner, it'll run fine without it. If the motor is too noisy for you, you can get new foam liner at West Marine, etc.
- Scott
