It's a Chevy V6 (without balance shaft), and the Alpha style drive has been around since the late 60's

If it is the 4.3 v6 its a good package. You have to make sure its in good shape of course. I don't know all the configurations the 470 came in but, if that engine happens to be a 4 cylinder leave it alone.

EDIT: Don types faster than me.

I don't know why but if you search enough, most post on here tell people to run away from the 470, period...

Re: Merc alpha 1 1988

why stay away from the 4 bangers?

it's not a question of 4 bangers in general, only the Mercruiser 3.7L engine, most know as the 470.
Aluminum block (open deck design), with a 460 Ford head. Serious issues with the charging system, cooling systems, oil in the antifreeze, etx.
Unless you like repairing engines, avoid them.

Don't know where you live but if it gets cold check for freeze damage! Late Chevy blocks are so thin they will damn near crack by giving them a cold stare!

In ontario so yes the weather (being freaking cold) is a factor. Thanks for all your input....after taking a bath on my first purchase (OMC stringer) I am taking my time and all your input (experience) and searching for my next boat
