Keep an eye on the temp gauge while it's runnin, and your testin.

If it's the coupler, the impeller in the drive won't be spinnin.

If it's the driveshaft at the top of the lower unit in the drive that is sheared off, the impeller won't be spinnin.

may be no teeth on gears or verticle shaft splines may have sheared.have a look under top cap as it only takes 2 mins to remove.engine not running of course.if u select either gear rotating prop should c some results.

Re: merc alpha one drive broken help

thanks guys i did not do any testing as yet, boat is still in the water .
ok i did a few search and found some info, with the engine running look to see if the shaft behind engine is turning that should rule out the coupler ???
with the engine off push the shifter wot in drive spin the prop by hand ccw it should engage ???? any more info to take with me guys.

thanks

yes

if the shaft is turning, the coupler is okay

with the boat out of the water and engine OFF, put the drive in FWD gear and rotate prop counterclockwise, if the prop spins see if the propshaft spins too, if not - spun prop hub

if the propshaft spins with the prop, pull the top cap on the drive and see if the gears are shredded

Re: merc alpha one drive broken help

ok guys update update, boat is out the water now , i push the shifter to wot, then turn prop by hand, gess what prop turn but the shaft dosent i could calerly see where the hub is spinning free. next install a new prop with new hub turn ccw again this time it dosent slip, i then went to the damper and make a mark, go back and turn the prop real hard take a lot of strenth it turn the damper and the flywheel so that rulu out a fail coupler. i pull the coil wire turn the engine ove with the keys the coupler spins so coupler is good. what is happen now is it is not going in drive or reverse, i put a muff on and start it up no drive or reverse. when push the shifter to wot the little ball on the shift intrupter does nothing it just sit there in the valley. could it be the shift cable slip of the drive .

what could cause it to not going in gears. ???? is the drive shot?? is it possible that on that day the drive came up with two problem at once . spun prop and something else???

thank guys i think we are close in solving this.

Disconnect the lower shift cable at the engine. The cable that goes from the engine to the outdrive. Now, start the engine on muffs and at idle see if you can shift gears by pushing and pulling the lower shift cable itself.

Have you changed the gear lube yet and looked at the gear lube and magnet on the drain plug?

Re: merc alpha one drive broken help

after sitting here trying to solve this puzzle, this is what i came up with, with the engine off it goes in gear that is why the prop lock up, right?? but with the engine running it does nothing. aaagg wow puzzle.

Re: merc alpha one drive broken help

If it were me, I'd pull the whole drive, and then separate the upper and lower half.

My guess is the splined driveshaft on the lower half has sheared off at the oring just below the splines.

Here's a video on separating the upper and lower half of the drive.

Here's a pic of just the lower half so you can see the driveshaft on the lower.

"IF" that is the case it's time for a new lower half, or have that one fixed, which usually costs more than a new aftermarket lower.

You can buy the drive as a complete unit, upper half or just lower half. If the upper is in good shape, which you said you opened the top cover and the gears looked good?

But I wouldn't just go buy a new anything without confirming what is actually broken.

Ok so, lets think about this... Shifting the drive by hand will engage forward and reverse, engine will not transfer power to the prop.

You already opened the top cover and the gears looked good and the shaft IS turning behind the engine...

Re: merc alpha one drive broken help

as stated previously if its going in gear turn prop and see if the gears r rotating as i believe you have lost the splines off the verticle shaft.look in cap whilst doing this.more than likely its time to drop lower off as guessing is getting us nowhere.
