I have a 1995 Merc/AlphaI 3.0/135 HP motor that stalls when it is put in neutral/idle.

As I understand it from past postings, the rpms should be around 650/700 rpms. Is that correct?

Anything else I can try?

Thanks in advance!

It could be any number of things but usually carb related.

But most importantly, the idle setting is 650-700 with the boat in the water and in forward gear, which means neutral will be higher, probably 900 or so.

I had one that stalled when put into gear...ended up being carb OH and replaced broken advance springs in the distributor....ran great then!

hope that helps...

mebbe check timing too...and bring the idle to 800 or so...650 is a bit low unless its a perfect running engine/carb etc....

If I understand correctly, The idle should be set to ~800 rpms, in the water in neutral position?

I'd set it for 800RPM on land, then see where it idles on the water, when warm, in forward gear,,, needs to be 650-700RPM. Setting idle on land or in neutral in the water means nothing as the correct setting is "boat in the water, engine warm and idling in gear". You will have to play with the idle mixture and idle speed adjustments to get it dialed in, so it will idle smoothly while in gear at the proper RPM.

I would look at other tune-up items also (plugs, wires, points, condenser, cap, rotor, fuel filters, etc.) if they haven't been done recently. Make sure everything is 100%.

If it stalls when you shift from forward to neutral or from reverse to neutral. Then your shift cable is probably binding.Needs to be replaced.J
