Re: merc control compatability 650

I've run into problems where the plugs look the same but they're wired a bit differently. I'm afraid I can't narrow that down too well. In general, as long as the plug has at least the same amount of sockets as the motor has pins, it should work.

Mechanically they should be the same, but I've also run into controls with shift cams that operate in the opposite direction. The controls are the same, just the shift cams are different.

Sorry I couldn't answer your specific question, but that should give you some things to look at. The same basic control was used throughout the 60s and 70s anywhere from 35Hp thru 150Hp.

The controls will work, however, the wiring harness will not. The 650 controls will work on most later model Mercs with an external connector plug, but the 800 was specific in that it has standard points ign and the pin-out on the connector harness is different. If I recall, the neg and pos conn's are opposite on these.

If your 800 is a direct-reversing, only the "dockbuster" controls will work. If it's a Full Gear Shift model, you'll be able to use your 65HP box and control cables, but will need a harness and switch assy from any Full-Gear Shift Inline 6 which used the points ign. CDI ign model's won't work.

HTH.........ed
