Just started the boat with the muffs and it over heated. Took the lower half of the outdrive off, and changed the sea water pick up pump. Started the motor and it did not overheat and ran quite well.

Problem, I can not shift in forward or reverse, I need some help.

Thank You

Something was misplaced, was the control box and lower in fwd? was the SS washer placed on the splined shift shaft?

Re: Merc Cruiser 888

ya just need to put everything in fwd. the remote and the drive. with the drive upper and lower separated ya still need to do this. ya just manually rotate the shift shaft in the lower while turning the prop ccw. when the prop locks and won't turn anymore it's in fwd. put a bungee on the prop to keep it loaded ccw. if the prop turns cw the slightest bit it will no longer be in fwd.
the washer just sits on top of the lower shift shaft. it does nothing more than raise the shift shaft in the bell housing high enough that it totally engages the coupler from the shift shaft in the upper. the coupler will be facing fore and aft when it's in fwd.

Yes, that washer was there, and I made sure that the housing slipped over the splined shift shaft, it feels like it is bound up, the same forward and reverse.

and I made sure that the housing slipped over the splined shift shaft,
the problem is, the splines will mate multiple ways. that's the reason for putting everything in fwd.

Do they look like this, are you sure the shoe was aligned with the splined shaft and not forced together.

fwiw...

that drive is in neu.

if the coupler were facing fwd. it would be in fwd. if the coupler were turned further to port than it is in the pic. it would be in rev.
