Last year I replaced a blown johnnyrude with a good (make that great) deal I got on a '96 Merc 50hp 2 Stroke 3 cyl. It was great to me last year, and getting ready for another. I'm getting a bit worried reading about the "stator" and "switchbox" crapping out. Should I carry a spare of these expensive parts onboard? Are they that bad?

Jim,

You could carry spares, but you'd need a few tools to fit them. And it's not a job I'd like to do at sea! Most of the bad ones have been weeded out by now. Just get a Merc dealer to check to make sure yours has been changed to the latest ones.

Chris...........

Re: Merc Electronics

Thanks Chris. Is there a number on the components I could check to make sure myself (say, above a certain number), or does that require major disassembly. I'm pretty handy and don't mind taking a few things off to check...getting ready to de-winterize anyways.
Jim
