I drained the foot on my merc 650. Well, I should say I drained the water out, there was no oil. I put oil in it and it didn't leak over night. I put it in the water and you could see it then. Its leaking out of the prop. Could I change the seal myself?

If you have the tools, you can indeed change it yourself. There are some specialized tools required for that lower unit, like snap ring pliers and what not. If you dont have a manual, I highly recommend you get one.

I have snap ring pliers. Where could I get a manual? I'm not sure how much a shop would charge.

There is a link at the bottom of this page to buy manuals. From memory & not knowing the year of your engine, the only troubles you might have changing the seals: are removing the threaded retaing ring on the bearing housing just drill holes in it & break it out but dont damage the threads in the case. Also the bearing housing may be corroded in the case so some heat might be required.<br />It would be a good idea to check/replace the bearings whilst you have the box apart cos if they have had no lube they are probably not well. Also replace all other seals on the box.
