OK- I'm a Merc sterndrive guy---now one of my best freinds 1989 OMC 2.3- overheated--they have owned the boat for 3-4 years and have never changed the impeller---my job will be to change the impeller and try to start it and see if the overheating episode has wrecked the engine----any help would be great---thanks Steve

There's almost no detail in your posting. You'll get more help if you explain what happened when it overheated, what you found when you replaced the impeller, how it ran once you started it, does it run now, was it run 'till it quit before, etc.

At least the OMC impeller is on the upper part of the drive and takes about 10 minutes to change,
Make sure you get the new gaskets and rubber o-ring seal for the housing.

Re: Merc guy fixing OMC impeller ???????

this is one of the few things on that generation of omc sterndrives that OMC and merc owners will agree on -- omc's integration of the sterndrive WP and the simplicity of changing it is one of its best features.

I could probably walk my 9 y/o daughter through it in 20 min.

Once you remove the triagular shaped plate off the rear top of the drive (3x 10mm bolts IIRC) it's pretty self explanatory.

Wish my older OMC were that easy. I have to remove the drive from the boat to tackle that one! Jeesh!

Thanks for the input---all I know is that my freind called me and said the boat overheated and quit---I ran over and towed it in so the idea today was to pull the impeller and start there--I thought the OMC's were easier to change impellers on so I thought I'd start there---stay tuned--Thanks Steve
