Howdy my first post guys, got a 98 merc 200 offshore with 197 hours. returning from an offshore trip 10 days ago. when i reduced power at the channel mouth heard klunking sound in engine, sounds like a bolt or nut roaming around in there but the sound is muted. engine is running smoothly and will go to wot without a problem and no smoke. my motor guy replaced the top bearing. i'm nor sure which one but one that is easy to get too, didn't solve the problem. sounds like the noise is high in the motor but it might be a resonence from the lower unit??? any ideas anyone, the marine doctor has given me some advice but am looking for some more feedback, my guy thinks we need to split the case and i am trying to avoid this. don't want to spend $4000 on a $5000 ENGINE.

Re: merc klunking

is there any change in the feel of the throttle
lately? does it shift smoothly and quietly?
wondering if it may be the cluth dog or the
throttle cable.(not engaging forward correctly)
good luck,
M.Y.
