Merc V150 cranking issues.

Hello, New to the forum. I have a 1979 V150 on a 20' bass boat. It has sat in my barn for 8 years. I recently told my son I wanted to give him the boat and we would pull it out and see what it would take to get it running. We checked and confirmed that the plugs were firing, removed, flushed, and cleaned the fuel tank, replaced the fuel line, installed a new fuel pump, and installed a new water pump. We had a new battery with below recommended cranking amps. We were amazed when the motor fired and ran. We shut it down after a few seconds due to not having any cooling water attached. The motor would then only crank slowly then not at all as if the battery was dead. We then purchased a new 820 cranking amp battery and tried again. Once again it fired and ran for a few seconds then would not crank again. We then removed the starter and had it checked and serviced at a recommended shop. The technician tested the starter on a growler and installed new brushes. We attempted to start the motor again. It will spin and fire on the first attempt after setting, but will not on a second attempt. If we remove the spark plugs it will crank great on the first attempt, and then not at all. Our compression check was good. Could this still be a starter issue? What could be internally wrong with the motor to cause these symptoms? Thanks in advance!

Haven't checked that out Martin. I'll check it today. That makes sense, never thought of it. Thank you!

Re: Merc V150 cranking issues.

Ok Martin, I drained the lower unit and captured 1/4 of a Folgers jug of gear lube. Man was it nasty! Black as coal! The Seloc manual states that the lower unit capacity is a hair over 24 oz. But it did have lube. What else could it be causing the cranking issue? I ordered a new starter today but I don't think that is the problem. What about the solenoid Martin? If the starter engages does that mean the solenoid is good?
I've been investing allot of time in the old boat. Removed and installed new carpet and have all the instrumentation working. I'd love to hear the old girl run!

OK, this one is a bit tricky.

BTW, if you've "popped it off" a few times without water hooked up, you toasted your new water pump. Never fire this engine without water supplied, even for a second.

When it fails, does the starter engage the flywheel and fail to turn it, or not try at all?

No try, solenoid clicks cleanly, -->solenoid is bad, or connection between solenoid and starter is bad.

No try, solenoid chatters --> Battery cables.

No try, no click --> solenoid or key switch, or cabling in between.

Tries --> Hold the key in the start position for several seconds, then immediately look for hot spots in the battery cables and solenoid. Hot spot is problem.

I'm assuming the starter man knew his stuff. It's possible, but not probable that if he didn't turn and sub cut the armature that it's shorting out when it's heating up.

hope it helps
John

Re: Merc V150 cranking issues.

We've had the lower unit submerged in a barrel of water since we installed the water pump. I noticed yesterday when giving it a try that the battery cable's, especially the ground, was very hot. I've also noticed in the past that the positive post on the starter gets really hot.
