Re: Merc V6 Bleed Hose Routing and types.

Chris,
Thanks for your support. The serial number of my 175 is A8056125 which suggests 90-86133-3 is the correct manual? ....

Well, here's a surprise. You have the correct manual for that serial number. The 'A' in the front of the serial number is the Australian identifier, NOT part of the serial number itself.... So the serial number is '8056125'.

Another possibility is that you have a 'FrankenMerc', where the serial number is not the right one for whatever changes have been made to the engine by the morons, and this is precisely why I HATE THEM, and the people who create them, with a passion!!! It makes it virtually impossible to get the right manual and any of the right parts.

My reference books don't have Australian number in them, :mad: so you need to go to THIS website and determine the year of the engine. This is hoping that 'Richard Cranium' hasn't changed the decals to something completely different too. :mad: ... Here are the years with the appropriate manuals...

All for V6 175hp.

1976-1979 -> 90-86133-3
1980-1988 -> 90-97658-3
1989 -> 90-814098-1
1990-1992 -> 90-816249-1
1993 up -> 90-824052

Cheers, and let us know what you find...

....
One other interesting point, my manual doesn't have any copywrite restrictions/warnings/notifications. (If I was a lawyer I wouldn't have an old 175).

Re: Merc V6 Bleed Hose Routing and types.

Chris,
My motor decals are the same as the 1979 listings, so all seems OK (part no & service manual). The only dilemma is my bleed hose routing is not correctly shown in the manual. For what ever reason they appear to be the same as shown in the 1980-1988 manual.

Regards Rob.

Without seeing the engine further it's difficult to say, but I have seen enough of this sort of thing to say that you probably have a FrankenMerc. Some AH has 'upgraded' some parts of the powerhead, without considering the ramification for the future... like now.

You are in the unenviable position of knowing that some things are not as per the book, but you don't know which things, or the knock-on effect of those changes.

Someone very familiar with V6s of that era would know by looking, but as (I suspect) you don't have the advantage of seeing them every day of the week.

To the people who build these abortions... take note of this example of the problems you are causing for other people in the future. I can only hope that these abominations come back to you at some time in the future and haunt you for the rest of your days!

Re: Merc V6 Bleed Hose Routing and types.

Chris. Yer making it much more complicated than it is. So someone slapped on an early to mid 80's 2.4 power head for a repair. Big deal. The fact that the bleed routing is changed indicates that he probably didn't "frankenmerc" the power head, but moved it over complete with the crankcase front and reed plate.

Bob, if you can give me the numbers off'n one of the carbs, I can probably figure out what the power head is, and what the initial setup should be to start with. It would be good to know the compression also, as the heads might have been reworked a bit. I know I would do it if I were to put a fresh 2.4 on that leg. You'll probably find out that it's set up a bit off factory, and probably improved a bit from factory. Depending on what you want from it, you can go from there. They are fun to mess with, and it tends to be rewarding.

For now, if you're concerned about the bleed hoses, if it idles OK, they're probably OK. Otherwise, check the check valves and inspect the hoses.

hope it helps
John
