I have a 90 hp salt water series 2002 2 stroke merc that was factory installed on my Boston Whaler. When the key is turned to the on position I do not get the warning beep test that some of the earlier merc and mariners got. This has been the case since new. I did a test and the warning horn works. Just does not self test on start up. Any one have a similar rig that can let me know if the get a test beep or not. Thanks.

Kid Stuff,
Seeing there were no replies so far I thought I'd lend a hand. I dont know much about your problem but I do remember reading a post and solutions within the last few weeks, re-read them and see what you can find.

Re: Merc Warning Horn

Hi Kid Stuff,

My 2000 model 90hp saltwater series merc does not have a self test process on it, it is also not mentioned in owners manual. It does have the low oil warning (intermittent beep) and high temp alarm (continuous sound), just does not do a self test on startup. Owner's manual has a typo in it, does not describe difference between low oil and overheat alarms, had to check dealers workshop manual for correct description of sound. I think I read on Merc's website in engine specs pages, the self test process is only on the 115 & 125 4 cylinder motors in midrange sizes

regards
Bob

Kid Stuff, for what it's worth, I've got a 2002 90hp Merc 2 stroke (not salt water series), and it does not do a self test either.

Mercury has a low voltage warning horn kit that will allow the tast circuit to operate. Check with your local dealer. If they do not know ask them to call Tech Service for the part number.

Kid Stuff:

It appears you have your answer. Indeed, I have the EXACT motor you have, and get no test beeps. I know the oil alarm works, because it's gotten a little low in rough seas, and has triggered the alarm. Incidently, once I got some early bugs taken care of, this motor runs beautifully! How about yours?

I find the engine to be bullet proof so far. Never even stalled once.Since I have a 45 gal. tank , I run MDR fuel stabelizer all the time and the motor purrs . I have seen posts about rough Idle and stalling but that has not been my experiance. I would rcpmmend this engine to any one looking for a 90. It is very fuel efficient on my 16 BW Dauntless
