I got an 86 VIP that has some electrical problems. With the key it will do nothing at all. I can jump to the starter and the the boat turns over. There is not spark at the plugs or coil. Is there a saftey switch in the shifter box? what would I need to check next.

Re: Merc will not start with key

There are two safety switches. First there is a neutral safety switch in the hand control unit. And there is a kill switch that should have a lanyard attached to it. The neutral switch interrupts the power from the ignition switch to the starter relay so the starter will not work with the key is turned. The second is ment to be activated if the operator is thrown from the helm. If that switch is tripped the engine will turn over with the key but not start. Any how Don S posted a page outlining the procedure for trouble shooting an ignition system. Try a search, or if you wait some one will post a link to it.
